This visit to the city by the Dalai Lama is co-sponsored by The Tibet Center. The founder of The Tibet Center, the venerable Kyongla Rinpoche, requested these teachings by His Holiness, who will be speaking about the 70 verses on emptiness written by Nagarjuna, and the Diamond Cutter Sutra, written by Lord Buddha.

To adorn and commemorate this special occasion, The Tibet Center has been gifted with a thangka of Nagarjuna. This thangka is to be hung at Radio City Music Hall behind His Holiness during the teachings. After the teachings, it will be hung at The Tibet Center.

In the words of Kyongla Rinpoche, “Nagarjuna is the main trailblazer on the teachings of emptiness.” These 70 verses is one of the 6 treatises written by Nagarjuna. Kyongla Rinpoche said that they are very important, which is why he requested this teaching from the Dalai Lama.

Nagarjuna is depicted with snake like beings sprouting from his head. This thangka is appliqued and is quite large, around 15 feet in length. As stipulated by the Dalai Lama, the figure of Nagarjuna is depicted with Sakyamuni Buddha sitting on top of Nagarjuna’s head.
